SAN FRANCISCO - ZAK

INTRO

 

You begin your adventure as Zak McKracken.  You wake up in your bedroom, in what seems to be just another day.  Little do you know what you are about to get mixed up in. 

 

There are many dead ends in this game, so SAVE often, using different Save Slots! 

 

 

 

 

ZAK’S HOME

 

You wake up in your bedroom, after having a VERY strange dream!  Pick up SUSHI IN FISHBOWL.  Open the dresser drawer, and pick up PHONE BILL from the dresser drawer.  Read the PHONE BILL - yikes!  That’s one expensive phone bill!  Open the desk drawer, and take KAZOO from the desk drawer.  Now close the desk drawer again.  Notice there is something under the desk.  Try to pick up PLASTIC CARD from under the desk, but you just ending up pushing it further under.  Damn!  Use PHONE BILL to get the PLASTIC CARD from under the desk.  Well, what do you know - it’s your CASHCARD!  Read your CASHCARD to see how much money you have.  Pick up the rug corner to reveal some loose boards in the floor.  Try to open the loose boards, but you can’t pry them up with your finger.  Pick up TORN WALLPAPER from the wall on the right, next to the door.  Now open the door, and leave your bedroom. 

 

In your living room, watch a cut scene with some weird aliens.  Now try to use your TV, but it doesn’t work.  Pick up the seat cushion that’s leaning against the wall next to the TV, and put it back in it’s place on the settee.  You reveal a plug in the wall.  The TV is unplugged!  Oops!  Use power cord on the floor, in the power outlet on the wall, to plug the TV in.  Try to use the TV again - it still doesn’t work.  Pick up the left seat cushion on the settee, then pick up the REMOTE CONTROL that was hiding underneath the seat cushion.  Use the REMOTE CONTROL to turn the TV on, then watch the News Report.  Now walk right a few steps, into the kitchen area. 

 

Pick up the BUTTER KNIFE that’s hanging on the wall behind the sink.  Walk left, into your bedroom. 

 

Use BUTTER KNIFE with the loose boards in the floor - you accidentally bend the knife, and end up with a BENT BUTTER KNIFE.  Now leave your bedroom. 

 

Walk right a few steps, into your kitchen area. 

 

Open the kitchen cabinet, and pick up BOX OF CRAYONS from the cabinet.  All that’s left in the box is a single YELLOW CRAYON.  Use YELLOW CRAYON with the TORN WALLPAPER to draw the WALLPAPER MAP you saw in your dream.  Read the WALLPAPER MAP to see it.  Now open the fridge, and pick up EGG from the fridge.  Pick up SMALL KEY that’s hanging on the wall on the right, next to the door.  Now open the door, and go outside. 

 

 

 

 

13TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk left to the Bakery.  Read the sign next to the Bakery door to learn that it’s closed.  Use the Bakery doorbell - the Baker appears at his window.  Use the doorbell again, and keep using the doorbell, until the Baker throws some STALE BREAD at you.  It’s so stale, it makes a hole in the pavement!  Pick up the STALE BREAD.  Walk right a few steps, until you see the door for TPC - The Phone Company.  Open this door, and enter The Phone Company. 

 

 

 

 

TPC - THE PHONE COMPANY

 

Pick up APPLICATION, which is in the box next to the door on the left.  Read the APPLICATION to learn that it’s for The King Fan Club.  How exciting!  Use your YELLOW CRAYON to fill out the APPLICATION.  Now you should ignore the Representative behind the desk for now - he’ll only hinder you.  Now leave The Phone Company. 

 

 

 

 

13TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk left a few steps, to the entrance to your home, but don’t enter your home.  Notice the mailbox next to the entrance.  Use SMALL KEY with the mailbox to unlock it, then use your completed APPLICATION with the mailbox.  Now close the mailbox, so the Postman knows to collect it.  Walk right a few steps, and round the corner to 14TH Avenue Street. 

 

 

 

 

14TH AVENUE STREET

 

Read the sign in Lou’s Loans door.  Enter Lou’s Loans. 

 

 

 

 

LOU’S LOANS

 

Ignore the Lotto window for now.  Walk left to the Sell Window, and Sell the BENT BUTTER KNIFE.  Lou thinks it’s a silver sculpture, and adds it to his art collection.  Since you’re here, you should buy some stuff.  Buy the black & green WETSUIT on the left.  Buy the TOOL KIT.  Open TOOL KIT to find MONKEY WRENCHDUCT TAPEROPE, and WIRE CUTTERS.  Buy the GOLF CLUB.  Buy the HAT, then put on the HAT.  Buy the NOSE GLASSES, then put on the NOSE GLASSES.  Don’t you look dashing!  Buy the GUITAR on the right.  Now leave Lou’s Loans. 

 

 

 

 

14TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk right to the red door.  Read the sign on the door to learn that this is the Society For Ancient Wisdom.  You can’t access this yet, so just walk right to Bob E Pinz Hair Salon. 

 

Read the sign on the door to learn that Bob E Pinz is permanently closed.  Try to pick up the BOBBY PIN SIGN hanging outside the Salon, but it’s connected with wires.  No problem.  Use you WIRE CUTTERS with the BOBBY PIN SIGN.  Now head left, and go round the corner, back to 13TH Avenue Street. 

 

 

 

 

13TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk left a few steps, to The Phone Company.  Make sure you’re wearing the HAT and the NOSE GLASSES, then enter The Phone Company. 

 

 

 

 

TPC - THE PHONE COMPANY

 

It’s time to clear your very expensive phone bill.  Notice how, with your disguise, you look just like the Representative.  Open the counter door and walk behind the counter.  Use PHONE BILL with the computer terminal to register the bill as ‘Paid‘.  Now open the back door on the right, and enter the back room. 

 

Explore the back room if you like, but there’s nothing you can do here at the moment.  If you weren’t wearing your disguise, you would be locked in the Detention Chamber.  When you’re ready, leave this room, and go back to the shop area. 

 

Leave The Phone Company. 

 

 

 

 

13TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk left a few steps, to the entrance to your home.  If you haven’t done so already, post your completed APPLICATION in the mailbox next to your home.  Now climb up the stairs to your home. 

 

 

 

 

ZAK’S HOME

 

Walk over to the pipe under the sink, and use MONKEY WRENCH with the pipe under the sink to remove it.  Now use STALE BREAD in the sink, and use the red disposer switch behind the sink.  Pick up the resulting BREAD CRUMBS from the cabinet under the sink, and use the red disposer switch again to turn it off.  Use MONKEY WRENCH with the pipe under the sink again to replace it.  Now use SUSHI IN FISHBOWL with the sink to leave your pet fish in there, giving you an empty FISH BOWL.  Now leave your home again. 

 

 

 

 

13TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk right to the bus.  You can’t enter the bus, since the bus driver is asleep.  You need to wake him up.  Use your KAZOO.  The bus driver wakes up, and opens the bus door.  Climb into the bus, and use your CASHCARD in the CashCard Reader, to buy a ticket to the airport. 

 

 

 

 

SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT

 

Approach the Devotee - he’ll ask if you want to buy a book on Enlightenment.  Give him your CASHCARD to buy his True Enlightenment BOOK.  Now you already have an airline TICKET that your boss gave you, so just walk left to board the plane. 

 

 

 

 

AIRPLANE

 

After you’re seated, the Stewardess hands out meals to everyone, which consists of one bag of PEANUTS!  Stand up, and walk left, and enter the Bathroom. 

 

Pick up TOILET PAPER in the Bathroom, and use TOILET PAPER in the sink to clog it up.  Turn on the sink, and wait for it to overflow.  Now press the Call Button to summon the Stewardess.  While she is busy cleaning up your mess, leave the Bathroom. 

 

Walk right, and enter the Stewardess’s room on the right. 

 

Open the microwave, use your EGG in the microwave, and turn on the microwave.  Now go back to your seat, and wait for the egg to explode. 

 

The Stewardess will be busy for a while, cleaning up the egg in the microwave.  Start opening all the overhead compartments, until you find the OXYGEN TANK.  Pick up the OXYGEN TANK.  Now walk to the front seat on the right, and pick up the seat CUSHION.  Pick up the LIGHTER that falls to the floor.  Now walk back to your seat, and use your seat to sit down, and wait for the plane to land. 

 

After you land, you find yourself in Seattle Airport.

SEATTLE - ZAK

Watch a cut scene with the aliens.  Walk right to leave the airport. 

 

 

 

 

MOUNT RAINIER

 

Pick up TREE BRANCH from the tree.  Walk towards the mountainside on the right, and you’ll see the two-headed squirrel.  Quite a ferocious little beast, isn’t it!  Give your PEANUTS to the two-headed squirrel - he’ll grab the peanuts, and leave.  Now use the TREE BRANCH with the loose dirt above the hole to uncover a cave entrance.  Walk right, into the cave. 

 

It’s dark in the cave.  If only you had some light.  Use the ‘What Is’ command, and hover your mouse around the screen, until you find ABANDONED BIRD NEST.  Use your TREE BRANCH with ABANDONED BIRD NEST to catch it.  Now use the ‘What Is’ command to find the fire pit.  Use TREE BRANCH in the fire pit, and use ABANDONED BIRD NEST in the fire pit.  Now use your LIGHTER with the fire pit to start a bonfire, so you have some light.  Walk right a few steps, past the squirrel nest, to the wall on the right.  Notice the strange markings in the wall.  Use your YELLOW CRAYON with the strange markings, and you draw an Ankh, which turns into a doorway.  Go right, through the doorway, into a strange room. 

 

There’s a BLUE CRYSTAL on top of a pedestal.  Try to pick up the BLUE CRYSTAL, but it’s locked in place.  Use REMOTE CONTROL to open the pedestal, then pick up the BLUE CRYSTAL.  The room goes dark. 

 

Head left, and continue left, until you reach the airport. 

 

 

 

 

SEATTLE AIRPORT

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Use your CASHCARD in Reservations Terminal, and buy a TICKET back to San Francisco.  Now walk left to board the plane.

Walk right to the red door, and read sign on the red door.  Open the Drop Slot at the bottom of the door, and use your BLUE CRYSTAL with the Drop Slot.  Wait a few moments, and Annie will appear.  She invites you into her home. 

 

 

 

 

ANNIE’S HOME

 

You discuss the dream you both shared, and you learn about her friends, Melissa and Leslie, who are on Mars.  She gives you your BLUE CRYSTAL back, and she also gives you a yellow CRYSTAL SHARD.  When you’re ready, leave her home. 

 

 

 

 

14TH AVENUE STREET

 

Walk left to 13TH Avenue Street.

Walk left a few steps, to your mailbox.  You should have some mail in the mailbox.  Use SMALL KEY with the mailbox to unlock it, then pick up LETTER from the mailbox.  It’s your very own KING FAN CLUB CARD.  Now Switch to Annie.

You find yourself in a jungle.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Make your way through the jungle, using any paths, until you reach the village. 

 

 

 

 

VILLAGE

 

Walk left a few steps to the Doctor’s hut.  Read both signs on the hut, then enter the hut. 

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Inside the hut, read both diplomas on the wall, and read the photograph on the wall.  The Shaman must like golf.  Give him your GOLF CLUB.  The Shaman and his friends will perform a sacred dance for you, ending in some head-bobs. 

 

 

        IMPORTANT:  Take note of the order of the head-bobs.  This changes for every game. 

 

 

When the dance is over, walk right to the jungle.

Walk right to the guard in front of the Temple.  Try to open the door behind the guard, but he informs you that only devotees of the Guru may enter.  Give your BOOK to the guard to prove you are worthy, then enter through door, into the Guru’s Temple. 

 

 

 

 

GURU’S TEMPLE

 

Read the flyer, certificate, and postcard on the Notice Board.  Now walk right into the Guru’s room. 

 

Approach the Guru, and he will teach you how to use the BLUE CRYSTAL to place your consciousness into an animal.  After the lesson, walk left and leave the Temple. 

 

 

 

 

TOWN

 

Walk right a few steps to the haystack.  Use your LIGHTER with the haystack to set it alight.  Both guards (the one from the jail, and the one from the Temple) will come to investigate.  Quickly head left to the jail, and pick up the FLAGPOLE outside the jail.  Now enter the jail. 

 

 

 

 

JAIL

 

Pick up the JAIL KEY from the wall.  For a bit of fun, read the Wanted Poster and the flyer on the Notice Board.  When you’re ready, leave the jail. 

 

 

 

 

TOWN

 

Walk right a few steps to the Yak.  Read the sign on the Yak.  Now use your CASHCARD with the Yak to return to the airport. 

 

 

 

 

KATMANDU AIRPORT

After an enjoyable flight, you arrive at Lima Airport.  Walk right to leave the airport. 

 

 

 

 

JUNGLE

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Make your way through the jungle, using any paths, until you reach the valley. 

 

 

 

 

VALLEY

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  There’s a bird feeder in the ground, and a bird flying high up in the sky.  Read the sign next to the bird feeder.  Use your BREAD CRUMBS with the bird feeder, and when the bird comes to feed, use your BLUE CRYSTAL with the bird.  Your consciousness is now in the bird.  Watch the cut scene with the aliens. 

 

As the bird, fly right to a huge carving, then fly into the left eye.  Pick up the SCROLL.  Fly out of the eye.  Fly left, back to Zak.  Give SCROLL to Zak.  Switch to Zak. 

 

As Zak, quickly walk left to the jungle. 

 

If you took too long here, the aliens will teleport in, and abduct you.  If that happens, simply Load your game, and try again. 

 

 

 

 

JUNGLE

 

Make your way through the jungle, using any paths, until you reach the airport. 

 

 

 

 

LIMA AIRPORT

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Use your CASHCARD in the Reservations Terminal, and buy a TICKET to Mexico.  Walk left to board the plane.

After an enjoyable flight, you arrive at Mexico Airport.  Walk right to leave the airport. 

 

 

 

 

JUNGLE

 

Make your way through the jungle, using any paths, until you reach the ancient temple. 

 

 

 

 

ANCIENT TEMPLE

 

Enter the Temple through the lower-left entrance that looks like it’s still part of the jungle. 

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  I have to warn you, this maze is horrible!  You can get through it as follows. 

 

 

        -       This corridor is dark.  Use the ‘What Is’ command to find a torch in the wall,

                 and use your LIGHTER on the torch to light it. 

        -       Go through the upper-right door in the back wall. 

        -       This corridor is dark.  Use the ‘What Is’ command to find a torch in the wall,

                  and use your LIGHTER on the torch to light it. 

        -       Walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the right.

        -       This corridor is dark.  Use the ‘What Is’ command to find a torch in the wall,

                  and use your LIGHTER on the torch to light it. 

        -       Go through door on the right.

        -       Again, this corridor is dark.  Use the ‘What Is’ command to find a torch in the

                 wall, and use your LIGHTER on the torch to light it. 

        -       Again, go through door on the right.

        -       For the 3rd time, this corridor is dark.  Use the ‘What Is’ command to find a torch

                  in the wall, and use your LIGHTER on the torch to light it. 

        -       Go through the upper-right door in the back wall. 

 

 

You find yourself in the Statue Room.  Try to read the strange markings at the base of the statue.  There are some yellow splodges, but nothing else.  Switch to Melissa, who is currently on Mars.

Watch the cut scene with Leslie and Melissa.  Now open the door to the Shuttle Bug, and enter the Shuttle Bug. 

 

 

 

 

SHUTTLE BUG

 

Use the oxygen valve to top up the oxygen supply in your HELMET.  Open the glove compartment on the right - it says ‘I Love Mars‘ on it.  Pick up CASHCARDS and pick up FUSE from the glove compartment.  Pick up BOOM BOX, which is above the glove compartment.  Pick up DIGITAL AUDIO TAPE from the radio.  Now leave the Shuttle Bug. 

 

 

 

 

PLANET SURFACE

 

Read both CASHCARDS, and give Leslie’s CASHCARD to Leslie.  Also give FUSE to Leslie.  Now switch to Leslie.

Head left to the Monolith Ticket Dispenser.  Use your CASHCARD with the Ticket Dispenser to buy a TOKEN.  Now walk right a few steps to The Friendly Hostel.  Read the sign at the entrance, then enter The Friendly Hostel. 

 

 

 

 

 

THE FRIENDLY HOSTEL

 

You’re in the airlock.  Try to open the hostel door on the right, but it’s broken.  Use your TOKEN in the metal plate in the back wall to open it.  Pick up the BURNT OUT FUSE from the fuse box, but it crumbles to dust in your hands.  Use your FUSE in the fuse box to fix it.  Now close the Mars Door on the left, and open the Hostel Door on the right.  Walk right to enter the Hostel. 

 

This is the Sleeping Quarters.  Open the left locker door, and try to pick up gas from the locker, but you don’t need it.  Pick up the yellow VINYL TAPE from the right locker door.  Open the right locker door, and pick up TORCH from the locker.  Walk right to the bunk beds, and pull the covers from the lower bunk (you must do this as Leslie, because Melissa is too scared).  Pick up BROOM ALIEN from the bunk beds.  Pick up LADDER that’s leaning against the wall to the right of the bunk beds.  Walk left to leave the Sleeping Quarters. 

 

Back in the airlock section, close the Hostel Door on the right, and open the Mars Door on the left.  Pick up FUSE from the fuse box again, then walk up to leave The Friendly Hostel. 

 

 

 

 

PLANET SURFACE

 

Notice the sand on the ground.  Use BROOM ALIEN with the sand to reveal the solar panels.  Now walk right, towards the Shuttle Bug. 

 

Give the yellow VINYL TAPE to Melissa.  Give the LADDER to Melissa.  Now switch to Melissa.

Use the yellow VINYL TAPE with the DIGITAL AUDIO TAPE, so you can record on it.  Use DIGITAL AUDIO TAPE in the BOOM BOX.  Walk right to the huge door. 

 

 

 

 

HUGE DOOR

 

Notice the 3 buttons in the door.  In order to open this door, you have to press the buttons in the same order as you saw the Shaman and his friends perform their head-bobs at the end of their dance - I hope you took a note of them!  Use LADDER with the door to reach the highest button, then push the buttons in the correct order.  If you’ve done it correctly, the huge door will open.  Now pick up LADDER again, and walk up through the huge door, into the Great Chamber. 

 

 

 

 

GREAT CHAMBER

 

Walk to the massive door on the left. 

 

Use your LADDER with the pedestal next to the door.  Now turn on your BOOM BOX and select ‘Record’.  Push the crystal sphere at the top of the pedestal, and it emit’s a loud noise, which opens the massive door.  The noise is recorded on to your BOOM BOX.  Now turn off your BOOM BOX, and climb down the ladder.  Leave the LADDER here for now.  Now DON’T enter the doorway.  Instead, step back, away from the doorway. 

 

Switch to Leslie.

You see your friend Melissa here.  Walk up towards the upper-left massive door in the back wall. 

 

Pick up LADDER that’s leaning against the pedestal.  If it’s not here, then Melissa will have it, so go and get it from her.  Now walk up through the doorway, into another horrendous maze. 

 

 

 

 

GREAT CHAMBER MAZE

 

This part has to be done as Leslie, since Melissa is afraid of heights.  Now SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Find your way through the maze, using the following directions. 

 

 

        -       This corridor is dark.  Turn on your TORCH, so you can see. 

        -       Go through the upper-left door (it’s purple) in the back wall.

        -       Walk left a few steps. 

        -       Go through the upper-left door (it’s blue) in the back wall.

        -       Go through the purple door in the back wall.

 

 

You find yourself in a room with a huge alien device.  This device regulates the oxygen.  Turn on both switches on the machine.  When both gauges are at green, it’s safe to breathe, so take off your helmet to save your oxygen supply.  Now SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, then walk right to leave the room, and return to the maze. 

 

 

        -       Walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the right.

        -       Again, walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the right.

        -       Walk left to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the left.

 

 

 

 

GREAT CHAMBER

 

You’re back in the Great Chamber again.  But you’re not finished here yet.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, then enter through the massive door, into the Chamber Maze again. 

 

 

 

 

GREAT CHAMBER MAZE

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Find your way through the maze, using these directions. 

 

 

        -       Walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the right. 

        -       Walk right a few steps.  Go through blue door in the back wall.

        -       Go through door on the right. 

 

 

You find yourself in a Map Room.  Read the map to see that it’s a map of Ancient Earth.  It looks similar to Zak’s Wallpaper Map.  Read the carving on the Sphinx on the right, and read the strange markings below the sphinx. 

 

 

        IMPORTANT:  Take a sketch of the strange markings picture you see.  The picture changes for every game. 

 

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, then walk left to leave the Map Room. 

 

 

        -       Walk through the purple door in the back wall.

        -       Walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the right.

        -       Again, walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on the right.

        -       For the 3rd time, walk right to the end of the corridor, and go through door on

                 the right.

        -       Walk left a few steps, and go through door on the left.

 

 

 

 

GREAT CHAMBER

 

You’re out of the maze, and back in the Great Chamber.  Step down, away from the door.

Take off your HELMET, to save your oxygen supply.  Walk right a few steps to the middle massive door.  Approach the door. 

 

There is another pedestal here, but the blue sphere is broken.  Turn on your BOOM BOX and select ‘Play’.  The noise from the tape will open this door.  Don’t enter this door yet.  Instead, step back away from the door. 

 

Walk right a few steps, the middle massive statue.  Read the strange markings at the base of the statue. 

 

 

        IMPORTANT:  Take a sketch of the strange markings picture you see.  The picture changes for every game. 

 

 

Now walk right a few steps, to the massive door on the right.  Approach the massive door. 

 

This door also has a pedestal and a blue sphere.  As before, turn on your BOOM BOX and select ‘Play’.  The noise from the tape will open this door.  Don’t enter this door yet.  Instead, step back away from the door. 

 

All 3 massive doors are opened now.  Switch to Zak.

MEXICO - ZAK

ANCIENT TEMPLE

 

You’re still in the Ancient Temple in Mexico.  Read the strange markings at the base of the statue, to remind yourself of the yellow splodges.  Now use YELLOW CRAYON with the strange markings, and draw the sketch that Leslie saw on the Massive Statue, in the Temple on Mars.  Click on ‘Finished Drawing’.  If done correctly, the statue will release it’s grip on the yellow CRYSTAL SHARD, so pick up yellow CRYSTAL SHARD.  The room will go dark.  Walk left, so you’re back in the maze. 

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Find your way back through the maze, using the following directions. 

 

 

        -       Go through door on the left, in the back wall.

        -       Again, go through door on the left, in the back wall.

        -       Go through door on the right, in the back wall.

        -       Walk left to end of the corridor, and go through door on the left.

        -       Go through door on the right.

 

 

You should now be outside the Ancient Temple again. 

 

Walk left to the jungle. 

 

 

 

 

JUNGLE

 

Make your way through the jungle, using any paths, until you reach the airport. 

 

 

 

 

MEXICO AIRPORT

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Use your CASHCARD in the Reservations Terminal, and buy a TICKET to Miami.  Walk left to board the plane.
