Questprobe: Featuring Human Torch & The Thing

INTRO - CHIEF EXAMINER’S OFFICE

 

You start out in the Chief Examiner's Office.  TALK EXAMINER to learn that your goal is to free Alicia Masters from Doctor Doom.  You’ll have to master the unique abilities of both the Human Torch, and The Thing, in order to complete you task and survive your ordeal.

 

You can SWITCH between Human Torch and The Thing at any point in the game.   

 

Remember to SAVE GAME often.  If you make a mistake, simply RESTORE GAME.   

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TARPIT & SHACK

 

You begin your adventure as Human Torch.  The Chief Examiner has transported you into a valley surrounded by hills.  ENTER SHACK to enter the shack. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - INSIDE SHACK

 

There’s not much to see in the shack.  GET CANDLE, then go S(outh) to leave the shack. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TARPIT & SHACK

 

LOOK TAR PIT to learn that Thing is stuck in the tar pit, and he’s being sucked down.  You have to rescue him, before it’s too late!  Remember, as Human Torch, you have the ability to fly, so FLY TO THING to go to his rescue. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - ABOVE THE TARPIT

 

GIVE CANDLE TO THING.  Now SWITCH to Thing. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - IN THE TAR PIT

 

You’re stuck in the tarpit, and you’re slowly being sucked down.  Check your I(inventory) to learn that you have the candle from Human Torch, and also a watch.  GIVE WATCH TO HUMAN TORCH.  Now  HOLD BREATH, then WAIT 15, which means, wait for 15 turns. 

 

It isn’t long before you’re completely submerged in the tar pit.  It’s pitch black in the tar pit, and you can’t see anything.  But don’t panic.  All is not lost.  WAIT 10, so you wait for 10 turns, then FEEL AROUND the tar pit to find some machinery.  Remember, as Thing, you have superhuman strength, so SMASH MACHINERY.  It’s still pitch black down here, but you can move around.  Go W(est), then N(orth), then N(orth) again.  You should see a glow in the distance.  Go E(ast) towards the glow, and you find yourself in a cavern. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - CAVERN

 

There’s a wall of fire in the cavern.  EXAMINE FIRE to see a natter energy egg and a Bio Gem on the other side of the fire.  You can’t get through the fire, so SWITCH back to Human Torch. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - ABOVE THE TARPIT

 

You are still at the tar pit.  EXAMINE WATCH that you got from The Thing, to see how many moves you have made, as well as how well rested you are.  If necessary, REST 15 a few times, until you are back up to 100%.  Now as Human Torch, you have the ability to shoot bolts of fire.  You can even choose the strength of the fire bolts.  Set your FLAME ON HIGH to set the tar pit alight.  The burning tar pit causes a smoke screen, so that your actions are hidden from prying eyes.  So FLY HILLS to see the hills around the valley. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - HILLS

 

FLY CAVE, then ENTER CAVE to enter the cave. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVE

 

You’re in the safety of the cave now, so turn your FLAME OFF.  You’ll stop flying, and start walking, which uses less energy.  L(ook) around the cave, then LOOK UNDER BOULDER to learn that the boulder is balanced on top of a shaft.  SHOOT HIGH FLAME AT BOULDER to break a chip off it.  L(ook) around the cave again, and GET PEBBLE that broke off from the boulder.  EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15 or REST 10 a few times, until you are 100% rested.  Now DROP PEBBLE UNDER BOULDER, to throw it down the shaft.  Go N(orth), so you are outside the cave again. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - HILLS

 

SWITCH back to The Thing. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - CAVERN

 

You’re still in the cavern, looking at the wall of fire.  LIGHT CANDLE in the fire, so you can see in the dark.  Now go W(est), then S(outh), then S(outh) again, then E(ast). 

 

You see a hole dripping with tar.  Go S(outh).  Your candle starts flickering, and you see some holes in the ceiling and the walls.  You can also see the pebble that Human Torch threw down.  GET PEBBLE, then use your super-strength to THROW PEBBLE HARD UP SHAFT.  This creates a hurricane wind, causing dust to rain down on top of you, but don’t worry about that.  Note, you must throw hard, or it won’t have any effect.  You can’t do anything else at the moment, so SWITCH to Human Torch. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - HILLS

 

You’re on the hills outside the cave.  ENTER CAVE again. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVE

 

Wow, there’s a virtual hurricane in the cave now.  The pebble is also back again, since The Thing threw it up the shaft.  SAVE GAME here, then GET PEBBLE.  Now ENTER SHAFT to start falling. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - SHAFT

 

Fall D(own), then D(own) again.  Be careful not to fall a third time, or you will crush The Thing.  Now FLY, then set your FLAME ON NOVA to fight against the hurricane.  Continue D(own) to the bottom of the shaft, and into the cavern. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVERN

 

This is the same cavern where The Thing is resting.  EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15.  You’re flame will go out at some point, so you’ll be in complete darkness.  Don’t worry.  Go N(orth), then W(est), then N(orth), and N(orth) again.  You’ll see a glow in the east (sound familiar?).  Go E(ast) towards the glow. 

 

You’ve reached the wall of fire that The Thing was at earlier.  EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15 or REST 10 until you’re 100% rested.  EXAMINE FIRE, and you’ll see the natter egg and the bio gem on the other side of the fire - just ignore them for now.  ENTER FIRE to find yourself in a long tunnel. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TUNNEL

 

You’re within reach of the natter egg and the bio gem now, but just ignore them.  There’s also a gas jet in the wall, which you should escape from ASAP.  Go E(ast).  The gas jet explodes.  Go E(ast) again.  The tunnel becomes dark, and you hear the hissing of gas.  Go E(ast) again, then FEEL AROUND to find a hole.  ENTER HOLE.  Set your FLAME ON LOW.  You’re in a Maintenance Area. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - MAINTENANCE AREA

 

L(ook) around the area, and EXAMINE LEVER.  Notice that the left position is marked as low, and the right position is marked as high.  PUSH LEVER LEFT to reduce the force of the wind in the shaft.  Turn your FLAME OFF.  It’s dark, but at least you won’t risk setting the hissing gas in the tunnel alight.  Now ENTER HOLE

 

Go W(est), then W(est) again, so you’re at the tunnel with the gas jet. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TUNNEL

 

Go W(est) to the wall of fire. 

 

ENTER FIRE, so you’re back in the cavern. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVERN

 

You’ve passed the gas jet in the wall, so it’s safe to turn FLAME ON HIGH.  Go W(est).  The tunnel should be dark, but thanks to your flame, you can see perfectly.  Go S(outh), then S(outh) again, then E(ast), then S(outh). 

 

You’re back in the shaft, with The Thing. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - SHAFT

 

EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15 or REST 10 until you’re 100% rested.  If you’re flame hasn’t been blown out in the wind, turn your FLAME OFF now to conserve your energy.  Now GET THING, then FLY UP SHAFT.  FLY UP again, and repeat FLY UP, until you reach the cave in the hill. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVE

 

It's light here, so turn your FLAME OFF.  You’re probably tired, after carrying The Thing all the way up the shaft.  EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15 or REST 10 until you’re 100% rested.  Now go N(orth), so you are outside the cave.

HUMAN TORCH - DR DOOM’S CASTLE

 

You’ve arrived at Dr Doom’s castle.  Turn your FLAME OFF.  Your friend Alicia is being held captive here.  The Blob is guarding the entrance, preventing you from entering the castle, so you need to find another way inside.  DIG the ground, and you find a purple worm.  Now go S(outh), then S(outh) again. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - FAIRGROUND TENT

 

There’s a fairground tent here.  ENTER TENT

 

Inside the tent are the Circus Of Crime.  A nasty bunch of thugs.  LOOK CANNON, and try to GET CANNON, but the Ringmaster commands you to leave.  Fair enough. 

 

Outside the tent again, DROP THING, then SWITCH to The Thing. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - FAIRGROUND TENT

 

As The Thing, maybe you’ll have more luck with the Circus Of Crime gang.  CLOSE EYES, then ENTER TENT

 

If you can't see Ringmaster, he can't affect you.  GET CANNON, then EXIT TENT

 

OPEN EYES, so you can see again.  Go N(orth), then N(orth) again, back to the field. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - FIELD

 

DROP CANNON, then SWITCH to Human Torch. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - FIELD

 

It’s time to explore the nearby town.  ENTER LATVERIA, so you’re in the heart of town. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TOWN OF LATVERIA

 

It’s like a ghost town!  Shops are boarded up, and villagers have fled.  What a shame.  ENTER SHOP

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - SHOP

 

GET GUN POWDER, then go E(ast) to leave the shop. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TOWN OF LATVERIA

 

Go E(ast), then N(orth), then N(orth) again. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - FIELD

 

You’re back in the field with The Thing.  PUT GUNPOWDER IN CANNON, then SWITCH to The Thing. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - FIELD

 

Time to perform the great ‘Get Shot From A Cannon’ trick.  ENTER CANNON to climb in.  Now SWITCH back to The Human Torch. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - FIELD

 

AIM CANNON AT BLOBFIRE CANNON AT BLOB, then SHOOT HIGH FLAME AT BLOB.  Blob steps out of the way, but you successfully manage to shoot The Thing into the castle wall.  Now turn your FLAME OFF, then SWITCH to The Thing. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - FIELD

 

There’s a nice Thing-sized dent in the wall now (how did that happen, hee hee).  Go S(outh) into the castle. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - CASTLE

 

You can see Xandu, Alicia Masters, and a statue of Dr Doom here.  Xandu commands you to leave. 

 

You need to get rid of Xandu, somehow.  Maybe The Human Torch could help you out here?  SWITCH back to The Human Torch. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - FIELD

 

FLY HILLS, then FLY CAVE

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVE

 

Turn your FLAME OFF, then ENTER CAVE

 

EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15 or REST 10 a few times, until you’re 100% rested.  Now ENTER SHAFT

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - SHAFT

 

Fall D(own), then D(own) again, so you‘re at the bottom of the shaft. 

 

FLY, then turn your FLAME ON NOVA to fight against the strong wind.  Now FLY DOWN SHAFT, to the tunnel. 

 

It's pitch black here, but don’t worry.  Go N(orth), then W(est), then N(orth), then N(orth) again, so you‘re in the cavern. 

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - CAVERN

 

You see a glow to the east, so head E(ast) to the wall of fire. 

 

ENTER FIRE, and go E(ast) to the long tunnel.  

 

 

 

 

HUMAN TORCH - TUNNEL

 

EXAMINE WATCH, and REST 15 or REST 10 a few times, until you’re 100% rested.  Now SHOOT HIGH FLAME DOWN TUNNEL to cause an explosion.  SWITCH to The Thing. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - FIELD

 

You’re still standing outside the castle.  Suddenly, you see a gas explosion (thanks to Human Torch’s actions), causing the entire tunnel to collapse.  Go S(outh), into the Castle. 

 

 

 

 

THE THING - CASTLE

 

Inside the castle, the statue of Dr Doom has fallen over, knocking Xandu unconscious.  Hurray!  GET ALICIA to rescue her. 

 

 

 

 

If you have done everything correctly, you automatically return to The Chief Examiner's office, and he tells you the password MAEGEN.
