King's Quest 3: To Heir Is Human

WHERE TO GET IT:   GOG














You begin your adventures inside Manannan’s house.  For the first part of the game, Manannan will give you random menial tasks to complete, and if you don’t complete them in time, he will punish you.  But he does leave his house every so often, giving you a chance to plan your escape.  For this reason, I recommend you keep the clock timer turned ON, until Manannan is dealt with. And as always, SAVE OFTEN!

 

The tasks are:

 

CLEAN THE KITCHEN:  The kitchen is on the Ground Floor, behind the Dining Room.  Go there, walk to left of the fire place, and type GET BROOM.

 

EMPTY CHAMBER POT:  The chamber pot is in Manannan’s bedroom.  Go up to the First Floor, and enter room at top of the stairs.  The pot is at the left wall, next to the bed. Walk over to it, and type EMPTY POT.

 

FEED THE CHICKENS:  Go outside, walk to chicken feed behind the chicken pen (big yellow sack), and type FEED CHICKENS.

 

DUST THE OFFICE:  The office is on the Ground Floor.  Just as you enter the house, there’s a room right in front of you. The duster is on the pink cabinet at bottom-left corner of the room.  Go over to it, and type GET DUSTER.

 

 

MANANNAN'S HOUSE

 

Okay, let’s begin.  Manannan will appear in a few seconds, and give you a task to complete - do it.

Manannan may come to check up on you after a few minutes, but just ignore him.  After you’ve completed your task, go to the kitchen on the Ground Floor (if you’re not already there).  Go to table on the right, and GET FOOD, but resist the temptation to eat any of it.  Go to shelves on the left wall and GET BOWL.  Go to left of the fireplace (there‘s a rack hanging on the wall), and GET KNIFEGET SPOON.  Walk down to the dining room.  Go over to the table, and GET CUP.

After 5 minutes has passed (see the clock timer at top of screen), Manannan tells you he’s going on a journey.  He won’t be back for about 25 minutes (see clock timer).  When he is gone, this gives us a chance to explore the house, and begin planning our strategy to escape.

Keep an eye on that clock timer!

You must have noticed the cat wandering around.  Well, now that Manannan is gone, look for the cat again - it could be anywhere in the house.  When you find him, walk up to him, and GET CAT.  He’ll probably scratch you and wriggle away a few times, but keep trying, until you have a good grip on the cat.  Then GET FUR. Hehe, stupid cat!

 

Go to First Floor (if you’re not already there).  Go into Manannan’s bedroom.  Stand in middle of the room, and LOOK CUPBOARD.  You notice something metallic on the top of it.  Walk over to the cupboard at top right of the room, and LOOK ABOVE CUPBOARD. You find a KEY hidden on top of the cupboard, and automatically take it.  OPEN CUPBOARD, and MOVE CLOTHES, to discover a MAGIC MAP, which you automatically take.  The map is blank right now, but it will fill up as you explore Llewdor.  Walk over to the Vanity dressing table at end of the bed.  OPEN DRAWER in the vanity table, and you automatically take the MIRROR. Walk over to chest of drawers on the right, and - you automatically take a vial of ROSE ESSENCE.  Now leave the bedroom.

 

Walk upstairs to the tower.  There’s a dead fly on the floor, near window on the right.  Go over to it, and GET FLY.  You keep the wings, but throw away the rest (Yuck!).  For a bit of fun, USE TELESCOPE.  Now leave the tower.

Go down to the Ground Floor, and enter the office.  Walk over to cabinet in the bottom-left corner.  You have the key from Manannan’s bedroom, so UNLOCK CUPBOARD.  Wow, there’s a magic WAND in here - you automatically take it.  Now walk over to bookshelf on the right, and LOOK BOOKS.  You see another glint.  So MOVE BOOKS to discover a lever.  PULL LEVER - a trapdoor opens.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Enter the trapdoor, to find yourself in Manannan‘s hidden laboratory.  If the cat is here, go back up the stairs, then return here.  You don’t want the cat here, because it will trip you up and make you fall down the stairs.

In the laboratory, climb down all the stairs, right to the bottom.  Walk over to the shelves next to the stairs.  GET NIGHTSHADE JUICEGET FISH BONEGET MANDRAKEGET SAFFRONGET TOAD SPITTLEGET TOADSTOOL.  Now walk over to the Spell book on table at bottom right corner.

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Now you’re ready to cast your first spell - ‘Flying Like An Eagle Or A Cat‘.  The spells are shown in the manual which came with the game, but I’ll show here the relevant parts.  You have to be very careful when casting spells, or something quite unexpected will happen.  Just type what I type here:

 

 

 

     Flying Like An Eagle Or A Fly

     LOOK BOOK and TURN TO PAGE IV (not 4)

 

     PUT SAFFRON IN ESSENCE

 

     Now for the magic verse…

 

     OH WINGED SPIRITS SET ME FREE

     IN THIS ESSENCE BEHOLD THE MGHT

You now have Magic Rose Essence. Congratulations on successfully casting your first spell.

Now leave this lab, and head back up to the office.  Leave the office, and go down the Entrance Hall.

While Manannan’s away, we might as well take advantage of the situation, and go and visit Llewdor Town.  Go over to the front door, and OPEN DOOR to leave.  Outside the house, walk over to the chicken pen, and OPEN GATE to enter. Now GET CHICKEN, and repeat, until you succeed.  GET FEATHER.  You get a feather, and the chicken will scurry away.  Now OPEN GATE again, to leave the chicken pen.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Carefully make your way down the mountain path, all the way to the bottom.

 

 

 

LLEWDOR TOWN

At bottom of mountain path, walk down twice, to The 3 Bears House.  Keep an eye out for the Bandits, and avoid them if you can.  If they catch you, simply reload your game.  Now back to the bears - if you see a bear in the garden, or if you see them returning to their house, leave the screen then return.  KNOCK DOOR.  It no-one answers, it’s safe to

enter.  So OPEN DOOR and enter.  There should be 3 bowls of porridge on the table.  If there isn’t, leave the house and try again.  Now go to the smallest bowl, and TAKE PORRIDGE.  Head upstairs to the bedroom, and go to chest of drawers in top-right corner.  OPEN DRAWER to see a thimble.  GET THIMBLE.  Now leave the 3 Bears House.  Walk onto the flower bed, and GET DEW, to fill up your little thimble with dew from the flowers.

Walk up once and right once, so you are in the town.  Navigate over to the Tavern, OPEN DOOR, then enter.  Look at table on the left - if it is empty, leave the tavern, then return.  If there are 2 bandits sitting here, great!  Talk to them if you want, but they won’t say anything cos they don’t trust you.  Maybe we can trick them into thinking we’re not really here.

Remember that Fly spell you made earlier?  Now, we can have some fun with it.  DIP WINGS INTO ESSENCE.  Wow, you really have turned into a fly!  Wait for a few seconds.  The bandits will start talking again, revealing the secret of the rope in the big oak tree that they use to get in & out of the hideout.

 

Fly out of the tavern, and then go left 2 screens, so you are at the Oak Tree.  You’re hard to spot as a fly, so be careful.  Fly in through hole in the base of the tree, so you can see the rope.  Now fly out of the tree again.  Chant FLY BEGONE MYSELF RETURN to turn back into human form.  As Human-Gwydion, REACH INTO HOLE, to make the rope ladder fall from above.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Climb up the ladder, but don’t enter the treehouse yet.  LOOK IN TREEHOUSE to see if anyone is in there or not.  If someone is moving, climb back down, leave the screen, then return, and repeat the events of REACH INTO HOLE.  If someone is asleep in the chair, it’s safe to enter the treehouse.  Inside the treehouse, GET PURSE from table on the left.  If you’ve been whacked by the bandits, all your stuff will be here in the treehouse.  Go to bin at top-right and OPEN BIN, then GET ALL.  Now leave the treehouse and go back down the ladder.

Walk right 2 screens, so you are back in the town.  This time, navigate to the store.  OPEN DOOR, and enter.  Go to the counter, and BUY FISH OILBUY SALTBUY POUCH, and BUY LARD, using your newly acquired gold coins (heehee).  It’s important to PET DOG to get some dog hair.  Leave the shop.

 

Walk down one screen.  There’s a nice tree here, on the cliff top.  Notice that blue on the tree?  That’s mistletoe - this is a mistletoe tree.  So go over to it, and GET MISTLETOE.

Now unfortunately, we have to return to Manannan’s house, before he gets back.  So walk back up, so you are in the town again.  Walk left once, and walk up once, to the mountain path.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, then navigate up the mountain path.

 

 

MANANNAN'S HOUSE

Outside the house, OPEN DOOR, and enter.  Now you may have plenty of time left to do stuff, but let’s play it safe.  You must put everything back as you found it, or Manannan will punish you, so SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  On the Ground Floor, enter the office.  OPEN CUPBOARD on the left, and you automatically return the wand.  Go over to bookshelf on the right, and PULL LEVER to close trapdoor.  Also, MOVE BOOKS back into place.  Leave the room.

 

Walk up to the First Floor, and head right one screen to your bedroom.  Pretty shabby, isn’t it?  Specially compared to Manannan’s luxury room.  Anyway, go up to the bed, and HIDE ALL, to hide everything under your bed, where Manannan can’t see.  GET BREAD from under your bread.  Trust me, you’ll need it soon.  SAVE YOUR GAME again.  Manannan will be home soon, so go back down to Ground Floor and wait for him.

At just after 0:30, Manannnan will appear in a puff of smoke, telling you he’s hungry, before vanishing again.  Walk right to the dining hall - he’s there, waiting to get fed.  You better do something about it soon.  FEED MANANNAN.  He scoffs down all the bread you gave him, then leaves without a word.  At 0:35, he tells you he’s going to bed.  This is our chance to prepare another spell, so SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Go to your bedroom, and GET ALL from under your bed.

 

Now leave your room, and walk left one screen.  Head down to the Ground Floor, and enter the office.  You should still have the brass KEY, so walk over to cabinet on the left, and UNLOCK CABINET.  You automatically retrieve the magic WAND.  Go over to bookshelf on the right.  MOVE BOOK, then.  Walk down through the trap-door, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

 

Walk down stairs, all the way to the bottom.  You are back in the secret lab.  Walk over to table on the bottom right - the one with the spell book on. Okay, let’s begin.

 

 

     Transforming Another Into A Cat

You now have a magic cookie, all ready for Manannan to eat.  Except… it doesn’t look very appetising.  So CRUMBLE COOKIE INTO PORRIDGE. There… that looks much better.

We have to hide our tracks again, so climb up stairs, back to the office.  PULL LEVER to close the trapdoor, and MOVE BOOK to hide the lever.  Go over to pink cabinet at lower-left, and UNLOCK DOOR.  You automatically replace the wand.  Now leave the office.  

 

Walk up the stairs, and right to your bedroom.  HIDE ALL, and then GET PORRIDGE.  This will be a lovely treat for his breakfast.  Now we just have to wait for Manannan to wake up.  

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Make your way down to the entrance hall, and wait for him to appear.

 

 

 

At just after 1:00 on the clock timer, he appears, demanding you get him something to eat, then he disappears.  Head through to the dining room - there he is.  FEED MANANNAN, to give him the porridge.  It worked.  Manannan the evil wizard is now a helpless cat.  Yippee!  You’re free!  You can explore all you want now, without fear of punishment or death!

Make your way up to your bedroom, and GET ALL from under your bed.

Now remember that Magic Map you found in Manannan’s bedroom?  You can use it freely now, so LOOK MAP.  It’s a map of Llewdor.  The green squares are areas you’ve already visited, thus, areas you can teleport to.  Click on any square to move the arrow there, then F6 to teleport there.

 

 

 

LLEWDOR TOWN

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Make your way to the Oak Tree (refer to map,  if you get lost).  Go over to the acorns, and GET ACORNS.  If the ones you find are all newly fallen, keep looking until you find 3 dried acorns.  Leave the screen, and then return if necessary.

 

From the Oak Tree, walk left, so you are in the desert.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Now stand there, and look to the right - the way in which you entered the screen.  Type in USE MIRROR, and when Medusa appears, wait until she gets close, then hit Enter.  Medusa is turned to stone.

Now you’ve dealt with Medusa, turn around and LOOK MEDUSA.  There is a big rock and a small cactus on this screen.  GET CACTUS.   Walk down two screens.  Notice that strange mark in the grass?  Go over to investigate, and GET SNAKESKIN.

From the SNAKESKIN, head right 3 times, until you are at the giant spider web.  Walk onto the mud, and GET MUD, to scoop some mud with your spoon.  Walk right again, go into the water, and GET WATER to fill your cup with mountain water.

Now we still need an eagle’s FEATHER for our spells.  Walk back left again twice, so you are at the waterfall.  Wait here for a while, and an eagle should fly past.  If he doesn’t appear, leave the screen, then return.  He drops a feather, so GET FEATHER.

 

We need to go back to Manannan’s house in order to cast the spells.  Unfortunately, although we can use the magic map to teleport DOWN the mountain, we can’t use it to teleport back UP the mountain to the house.  We have to walk there!  So make your way back to bottom of the mountain pass, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Carefully walk up the path, back to the house.  OPEN DOOR, and enter the house.

 

 

 

 

MANANNAN'S HOUSE

Doesn’t it feel good, knowing that Manannan can’t hurt you anymore.  Walk into office on the Ground Floor.  UNLOCK CABINET in the bottom-left corner, to automatically get the magic WAND.  Walk over to bookshelf on the right.  MOVE BOOK, then PULL LEVER.  The trapdoor is open again.  Yippee.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, the walk down through trapdoor.  Walk down stairs, all the way to the bottom.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Time to cast some more spells.

There’s one spell we can’t complete yet - Teleportation At Random - but we’ll come back to that later.

When you’re ready, LOOK MAP.  Click on Spider Web cave at top of screen (top row, 2nd from right) to select it, and then F6 to teleport there.





LLEWDER TOWN

Outside the cave, DIP EAGLE FEATHER INTO ROSE ESSENCE.  You turn into an eagle.  Fly into the spider web - you automatically grab the spider in your beak, and take it out to sea.  Now after you turn back in Gwydion, Enter cave, to see the Oracle.  Watch the cutscene with the crystal ball.  Things with the Oracle are pretty intense!  She reveals your true identity, and she reveals that you have a sister, Rosella, who will soon be sacrificed to a dragon.  You HAVE to save her!  And quickly!  The Oracle gives you an AMBER STONE to aid you in your quest.  When’s she’s finished telling you everything, leave the cave.

Walk down, and then left, so you are back at the mountain path.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, and make your way up the path.

 

 

 

 

​MANANNAN'S HOUSE

Outside the door… pause for a moment, and listen to the chickens.  Now you’ve cast that spell, you can understand what they’re saying.  Now OPEN DOOR, and enter the house.  Ahhhh!  A house without Manannan!  Bliss!

 

For a bit of fun, look for the cat, and TALK CAT.  Hehe.

 

Walk into the office, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Walk down through the trapdoor.  Walk down all the stairs, till you reach the bottom.  Walk over to the Spell book, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  It’s time to complete the last spell.

 

 

 

     Teleportation At Random

And that’s the final spell completed.  Time to go and save your sister.  LOOK MAP, and click on the square with the town, then F6 to teleport there.

 

 

 

 

LLEWDOR TOWN

Walk right, along the pier, and you should see a boat.  TALK SAILOR if you want, but he isn’t very friendly.

 

Walk left again, into the town, and OPEN DOOR to enter the tavern.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  There’s some seamen here, having fun.  TALK MEN, to ask the captain for safe passage on his ship.  Naturally, he wants paid for his service, so GIVE PURSE to the captain.  The seamen will leave now, to go back to their ship.  You have to hurry, if you don’t want to miss your ride, so leave the tavern.

 

Outside the tavern, walk right along the pier, until you see the sailor.  Now simply walk across the plank, onto the ship.

 

But as soon as you step onboard… UH-OH!  They’re pirates, and they’ve taken you prisoner!

 

 

 

PIRATE SHIP

Watch the cutscene, as the ship sails across the sea.  You now find yourself in cargo hold of the ship.  All your possessions are gone (except for the magic dough in your ears that lets you understand animals).  Those lousy pirates robbed you blind!

 

Walk right, and see the mice.  If they’re not there, leave the screen, then return.  Wait a moment, and listen to their conversation.  It’s probably of no interest to you, so leave, then return and listen to a different mouse conversation.  Repeat this, until they start talking about treasure, and where it‘s buried.  Hmm, now that DOES interest you! Must remember those details!

In the room with the mice, there’s a small crate at front of screen.  Walk over to it, and GET CRATE.  Walk back left again, and DROP CRATE right next to the big crate (preferably on the right side of it).  Now JUMP CRATE to jump onto the small crate, then JUMP CRATE again to jump onto the bigger crate, and then JUMP LADDER.  Now climb up the ladder.

 

You’ve reached the middle deck of the ship.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  The Captain’s room is to your left - if the Captain is at his desk, simply go back down the ladder, and then come back up again.  As long as the Captain isn’t here, walk left into the Captain’s room.  Walk over to the chest at end of the bed, OPEN CHEST, and LOOK IN CHEST.  Wow, all your things are here! You automatically take them.

 

Walk right to the next screen.  If there’s any pirates here, simply leave, and then return.  Now look carefully in front of the lifeboat - there’s a spade here, so walk over to it, and GET SHOVEL (the game doesn‘t accept ‘spade‘, for some reason!).  So now, when you find the treasure on land, you can dig it up.

 

Now quickly leave before the pirates catch you, and head back down to the cargo hold, and then walk right to where you saw the mice.  Now you have to wait for a while.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Listen out for one of the crew saying ‘Land Ho’ - you might have quite a long wait, but be patient.  When you hear that, POUR SLEEPING POWDER ON FLOOR, and then say SLUMBER HENCEFORTH.  The entire crew has fallen into an enchanted sleep, giving you the chance to escape.

Walk back left, JUMP CRATEJUMP CRATE again, then JUMP LADDER.  Climb up 2 levels, so you are on the top deck.  Navigate over to the ladder, then climb down.  Walk right to next screen. Now from here, simply walk off the top edge of the ship.

In the water, swim right, but make sure to keep close to edge of the screen.  If a shark gets too close, simply go down to the next screen, and then return.  Keep on like this, until you reach land - it isn’t very far.

 

 

 

 

MOUNTAINS

Phew, you made it safely to land. Now walk right to next screen.

 

Nice palm tree here.  Remember what the mice said about buried treasure?  Go up to the palm tree, and then walk 5 paces right (you may want to slow down the speed, so you can count his steps).  Now DIG.  Hurray, you found the treasure!  You automatically take the treasure chest with you.

Now walk to the right edge of the screen, near the water, but don’t go in the water.  Walk up to the next screen.  Here’s you’ll find a mountain path similar to the one back at Manannan’s mountain.  But this one is more complicated, so I’ll navigate you through it.

 

 

 

 

​MOUNTAIN PATH

Walk up to the first ‘junction’, and take the left path to the next screen.  Here, the path seems to come to a dead end.  But don’t worry, stand in front of the big grey rock, and simply climb up it.

 

On the higher path, head right, back to the first screen, and follow the path round.  You find yourself high up now, with some treetops scattered around.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

 

Follow path right, to a pretty waterfall, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  The path appears to go right round the mountain, but don’t follow it, cos it’s a dead end.  Instead, stand next to the waterfall and climb up it.

 

In the next screen, you’ve reached the snowy mountaintops, and BRRRR, it’s cold!  Follow the snowy path right, to the cave, but don’t enter the cave.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

 

The Abominable Snowman is going to appear soon, and there’s no way to avoid him.  So let’s get prepared.  Type DIP EAGLE FEATHER INTO ESSENCE, but don’t press Enter yet.  Follow the path right, and as soon as the Abominable Snowman appears, press Enter.  The Snowman is confused, and decides to leave you alone.  You automatically turn back into human form, after a few moments.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

From here, use the lower-left path to head down to the next screen.  Now this bit is tricky, so SAVE often.  There are 6 cave openings here.  Navigate to the top-left cave, avoiding the ice patches, and avoiding falling off the narrow path.  You exit at the top-right cave.  Climb up the wall slightly, then navigate down to the bottom path.  Enter the bottom-middle cave, and you exit at the bottom-left cave.  Climb up wall, and navigate to the top-middle cave.  Enter this cave, and exit at bottom-right cave.  Phew!  That’s the caves dealt with.

Follow path right two screens, and then down to the next screen.  You’ll fall here, but don’t worry, it’s just a little fall, and you survive. You land in front of another cave.

You’ve now reached, Daventry.  This is where your sister is.

 

 

 

DAVENTRY

Hmm, Daventry seems rather run-down, don’t you think?  Walk left, then up to the old Gnome’s shack.  TALK  GNOME - it seems he’s been waiting for you for many years.  Walk up to the next screen.  The castle is here. But try as you might, you cannot get in.  Make your way back to the cave, where you landed.

Enter the cave, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Climb up the steps, all the way to the top.  When you exit the steps, you find yourself in The Land Of The Clouds.  The dragon is in the next screen, so you need to prepare yourself.  RUB OINTMENT ON BODY to make yourself invisible.  Now walk left to see your sister and the dragon.  STIR STORM BREW WITH FINGER.  BREW OF STORMS CHURN IT UP.  You cast the spell, thus killing the ferocious dragon.  After you become visible again, walk over to your sister, and UNTIE ROSELLA.  She’s very grateful to you for rescuing her.  Now you have to lead her home.  She’ll follow where ever you go.  Head right twice, to top of the stairs (with Rosella close behind), and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Make your way down all the stairs.

 

When you leave the cave, lead Rosella left to the well, then up to the Gnome’s shack.  The gnome is happy to see you both, and sprints ahead to the castle to spread the good news. Take Rosella up to the castle.

Watch the final cutscene as you and Rosella are reunited with your parents - the king & queen.
